The Rialia Museum of Industry, in conjunction with the Untzi Museum-San Sebastian Naval Museum (Guipuzcoa Regional Authority), presents its temporary exhibition Shipwrecks on the Basque Coast. This exhibition pays special attention to shipwrecks occurring in the Portugalete sandbank and surrounding areas between the 17th and the 20th centuries. It also acknowledges many other shipwrecks occurring along the Basque coast, some of which had a huge impact in terms of lives lost. Among all the various shipwrecks there is special reference to those caused by the gales of 1878, 1912, and 1961, which affected above all the fishing communities.
